Garage Door Safety 101: Protecting Kids and Pets from Common Hazards
Your garage door is one of the largest, heaviest moving objects in your home, and it’s easy to forget that when the kids are running in and out or the dog is darting under it to chase a squirrel. A few simple habits and safety checks go a long way toward keeping your family and pets safe.
Understand the Pinch Points
Modern garage doors are designed with pinch-resistant panels, but older doors can still trap small fingers between sections as the door closes. Teach kids to keep hands off the door itself, especially near the edges and hinges, while it’s in motion.
Test Your Auto-Reverse Safety Sensors
Every garage door installed after 1993 is required to have photo-eye safety sensors near the bottom of the tracks that reverse the door if something blocks the beam. Test yours monthly: place a roll of paper towels in the door’s path and close it. If the door doesn’t reverse immediately, call for service — this is a safety feature you don’t want to gamble on.
Keep the Opener and Remotes Out of Reach
Store wall-mounted openers at least five feet off the ground, and keep remotes out of reach of young kids who might treat it like a toy. Many openers also let you set a PIN-protected keypad code instead of leaving a button exposed.
Watch for Pets Darting Underneath
Dogs and cats can dash under a closing door in a split second. If pets have access to the garage, consider adding a dedicated pet door elsewhere, or make it a habit to do a quick visual check before hitting the close button.
Never Let the Door Double as a Play Area
It’s tempting for kids to hang on the door, ride it partway up, or use the tracks as a climbing structure — all of which can cause serious injury or damage the door’s balance. A quick reminder now can prevent an ER visit later.
